The Bat and the Bottle is the 20th episode of Colonel Bleep.

Synopsis

Colonel Bleep has a new rocket ship, the Trav-a-lab, made to survey space hazards. Dr. Destructo tries to sabotage Bleep's plan.

Plot

Colonel Bleep and the Futura High Command review reports of lost space ships due to hazards in the universe. To make space travel safer, Bleep proposes to create a map detailing the hazards. He will do so with a ship to survey and chart hazardous areas.

Bleep, Squeak and Scratch head to Factory City in Robot Land, where the robot workers create a ship, the Trav-a-lab, that Bleep will use for his mission. The Trav-a-lab is soon completed, ready for its first flight the following dawn.

Dr. Destructo learns about the Trav-a-lab and concocts a plan to destroy it before its maiden voyage. He sends his vampire bat to deliver a bottle of liquid futomic dynamite, with the following message:

FOR LUCK!

TO CHRISTEN THE

TRAV-A-LAB

—A FRIEND!

At dawn, Bleep, Squeak and Scratch find the bottle and its attached message. Squeak takes the bottle and brings it to the Trav-a-lab, with Destructo and his bat watching from Destructo's lair. Squeak breaks the bottle over the top of the ship, with nothing unusual happening.

The bottle is empty after the bat had drunk its contents. Destructo, unaware of what actually happened, blames his bat. In a rage, Destructo grabs the bat by his snout, twirls him in the air, and slams him onto the floor, creating a big explosion. The Trav-a-lab takes off without incident.

Trivia

• This episode marks the first appearance of the Trav-a-lab, which will largely be used in later episodes for its intended purpose. In particular, "The Wicked Web", "The Evil Eye" and "Fire Water", which cover the respective hazardous areas shown at the beginning of this episode.
